Welcome to the HRB PhD Scholars Programme in Immunology

 

Are you interested in pursuing a PhD in Immunology. Why not join us?

The Institute of Immunology (NUI Maynooth), in partnership with the School of Biochemistry (Trinity College Dublin) and Division of Infection and Immunity (Queens University Belfast) has recently been awarded funding for a HRB PhD Scholars programme in Immunology. This Tri-Institutional programme contains 20 research groups encapsulating the best basic and clinical immunology in Ireland. Industry will strongly support the programme with active participation from 5 companies spanning interests in drug discovery and development, diagnostics, biopharmaceutical/vaccine manufacturing and antibody-based therapeutics and services. The research programme has 3 main themes:

  • Novel insights into sensing and signalling in the immune system
  • The Immune System and Disease
  • Therapeutic Manipulation of the Immune System

Eligibility: Graduates in the Biological Sciences (1st or upper 2nd  class honours degree)

Stipend: € 18,000 per year plus fees plus laptop computer

Overview of Programme

 

Whilst a key aspiration of the 4 year programme is advancement of knowledge through research, it is also underpinned by structured training in generic and transferable skills. Year 1 will consist of taught modules specialising in advanced immunology and generic transferable skills and 3 rotation projects hosted by academic and industry laboratories. Years 2-4 will consist of a dedicated research project with continued mentoring in professional development.

Year 1

 Specialised taught modules in:

  • Advanced topics in Immunology
  • Applied Immunology
  • Methods in Molecular and Cell Biology
  • Clinical Immunology (co-ordinated by Prof. Feighery/Dr. Keogan)

Generic Skills Modules

  • Induction programme
  • Protection of intellectual proverty
  • Enterprise and entrepreneurial skills
  • Bioethics: Principles and Practise (co-ordinated by NUIM with input from Irish Council for Bioethics)
  • Effective Communication

3 Rotation Projects

 

Years 2-4

Dedicated research project with continued mentoring in professional development.
